Education abroad is an invaluable opportunity that supplements the Davidson undergraduate experience.
Davidson in Ghana
Over a period of four weeks, participants in the summer program will be immersed in both contemporary and traditional Ghanaian life. Based in Legon, a suburb of the capital city Accra, students will live in homestays with local families. The program includes two experiential learning day trips, and two weekend excursions into other parts of the country. All students take one course on Ghanaian culture and society, which fulfills the Social-Scientific Thought (SSRQ) Ways of Knowing requirement, as well as major requirements for Anthropology and Africana Studies. A Davidson faculty member teaches the course, which includes guest lectures by Ghanaian professors and artists.
How to Apply
All students planning to study abroad must meet with an advisor in the in order to start an application. All application materials, including transcripts, recommendations and other supporting documents, must be submitted by the appropriate deadline.
Apply by February 1 for fall semester, academic year or summer programs, and by September 15 for spring semester or winter break programs (a few programs may have different deadlines). Contact an Education Abroad advisor with any questions, or email edabroad@davidson.edu.
My advice for students considering this program is simple: yes, there are so many abroad programs to consider and so many wonderful adventures to be had around the world, but the Davidson in Ghana program is truly so unique and so unbelievably rewarding. I think it is also so important to consider where you decide to travel when stepping outside of the Davidson bubble, and what spaces might allow you to reckon with the complexities of things like identity, privilege, culture, and more - all of which we spend so much time discussing in class at Davidson.
