The French and Francophone Studies Major and Minor at Davidson

At Davidson, French and Francophone Studies majors and minors acquire knowledge of the language, literature, and cultures of France and the French-speaking countries of Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, North America, the South Pacific and Southeast Asia.

We aim for more than just knowledge. We aim to strengthen our students' critical and analytical thinking skills, as well as their ability to form written and oral arguments in the process, and to do so in French; and through this synthesis of knowledge and understanding, we strive to give our students the fluent world view and skills necessary to thrive in a global economy.

Courses You Might Take

FRE 103

This class is for students who want to quickly learn conversational French. The equivalent to French 101 and 102, with this course students will complete two semesters of French in one semester for 2 credits, and be prepared for French 201.

FRE 220

This course includes a critical discussion of the concept of la francophonie, the geopolitical forces that have impacted different areas of the francophone world, as well as how various thinkers, writers, artists, filmmakers, and activists have responded to them.

FRE 343

In this class, students will examine Mediterranean ecologies in literature and art to study how environments—from the sea and the desert, to the subterranean world—intersect with gender, migration, and social justice, among others.
